The New York Islanders signed defenseman Matthew Kessel to a one-year contract, the team announced today.
The signing of Kessel adds depth to the Islanders' defense, which is currently 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 43-34 record, on a L3 streak.
And with Kessel's experience in 99 career NHL games, the Islanders are hoping to turn their season around.
Matthew Kessel, 26, recorded three points in 29 games with the St. Louis Blues last season, and has played in parts of four seasons with the Springfield Thunderbirds.
The right-hand defenseman was originally selected by St. Louis in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft.
Kessel played three seasons at the University of Massachusetts, helping the club win an NCAA championship in 2021, and served as an alternate captain for the 2021-22 season.
He also played for the Fargo Force, Chicago Steel, and Sioux Stampede of the United States Hockey League, totaling 22 points in 114 games.
With his experience and skills, Kessel is expected to be a valuable addition to the Islanders' defense, and will likely play a key role in their upcoming games.
The Islanders are looking to bounce back from their current L3 streak, and Kessel's signing is a step in the right direction.
As the season progresses, fans will be watching to see how Kessel fits in with the team, and how he contributes to their success.
