The New York Islanders have signed 18-year-old defenseman Malte Gustafsson to a three-year entry-level contract.
Gustafsson, a 6’4 blueliner, was the Islanders’ first-round choice at 13th overall in the 2026 NHL Draft. The Vackelsang, Sweden native made his Swedish Hockey League debut with HV71 last season, playing 27 regular-season games and collecting three assists. He also suited up for HV71’s Under-20 squad, racking up 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in 19 contests.
Gustafsson’s international resume includes gold as Sweden’s alternate captain at the 2026 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship, where he earned All-Star honors with five points (one goal, four assists) in six games. He added silver at the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and bronze at the 2026 WJAC-19 and the 2024 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge, also landing WJAC All-Star honors.
The Islanders, sitting 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 43-34 record and on a three-game losing streak as of July 15, add a mobile, puck-moving defenseman with championship pedigree. Gustafsson’s size and offensive instincts could help stabilize a blue line that struggled during the club’s recent slide.
Gustafsson will report to the Islanders’ training camp this fall, likely joining Bridgeport for AHL development before pushing for NHL minutes. His entry-level deal runs three seasons, giving New York a low-risk, high-upside asset on defense. The Isles now have a top-15 pick locked in for three years, adding depth to a group that needs fresh legs after a tough finish to the 2025-26 campaign.
