New York Islanders Face Trade Interest for Defenseman Alexander Romanov

The New York Islanders may be parting ways with defenseman Alexander Romanov, who has garnered trade interest after an injury-shortened 2025-26 season.

What happened to Alexander Romanov?

Romanov appeared in just 15 games before suffering a serious shoulder injury that required surgery, keeping him out for the remainder of the season.

He was hit from behind by Dallas Stars forward Mikko Rantanen in November, leading to the injury.

Why it matters for New York Islanders

The Islanders are currently 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 43-34 record, on a L3 streak, and may be looking to make changes to their lineup.

Romanov has seven seasons remaining on an eight-year, $50 million contract extension he signed in late June of 2025.

What comes next for Alexander Romanov?

NHL.com's Stefen Rosner reported that teams are calling about Romanov's availability, despite his no-trade clause not kicking in until July 1, 2027.

The Islanders have seven defensemen under contract, including Romanov, Tony DeAngelo, Ryan Pulock, Adam Pelech, Scott Mayfield, Matthew Schaefer, and Isaiah George.

Romanov's $6.25 million AAV is a steep price for a third-pairing defenseman, but he could play in the top-four when healthy.

Through 15 games in 2025-26, Romanov managed just one assist, and has 84 points in 369 regular season games in his NHL career.

The Islanders' front office may be fielding legitimate offers for Romanov, and it will be interesting to see if they get a good enough offer to part with him before his no-trade clause kicks in.

Romanov's injury-shortened season may have affected his trade value, but he is still a quality defenseman signed long-term.

The Islanders will have to weigh their options and decide what is best for the team, as they look to improve their standing in the Eastern Conference.
